Environmental Radiation Science Course (ERSC)

Environmental Radiation Science

Assessment of biological effect of radiation

The main subjects of the ERSC are molecular and cell biological studies on the biological radiation, analysis of environmental impact of radio- active species, and computer simulation analysis of the biological radiation. The ESRC students mostly study Radiation biology, Molecular mechanisms of radio-adaptive response and radiation mutagenesis, and Environmental Radiation Sciences.

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is a disabled nuclear power plant by damaged earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. Very large amount of tritium was leaked from the nuclear reactor. One million tons of tritiated water (HTO) are filled in many tanks on the nuclear power plant. The most effective and safe method of disposing HTO is releasing out HTO to sea. It is examining how to release out HTO to the ocean safely, how to be monitoring the released tritium in environment. The future fusion reactor is planning to be used more than 10 kg (5x1018 Bq) of tritium as a fuel. It is indispensable to utilization of fusion to clarify the dynamics of the tritium within the fusion reactor. Tritium trapping and release behavior of fusion reactor materials are measuring. Additionally, tritium release behavior from the fusion reactor to environment is estimating.
